Buntin and deputy John Henry Woodard arrived at the Smoots’ residence, they spotted Fletcher walking through the Field in the direction of a pond on James DeBergh’s farm. They attempted to catch up with Fletcher but by the time they . reached him, he had climbed down the steep embankment of the pond dam and was standing in waist high water.
Attempts by the sheriff and deputy to persuade Fletcher to get out were unsuccessful. Herbert Smoot joined them and tried to assist Buntin and Woodard in pulling Fletcher from the pond. However, he continued backing out further into deeper water. The sheriff noted the rescuers couldn’t reach Fletcher, described as a large and powerful man.
