Stunted plants that are pale or yellowish may lack fertilizer and two or three pounds per 100 square feet should be added. For poor soil drainage, add organic matter next fall before plowing. If the soil is shallow or compacted, plow deeper and add organic matter.
Low temperatures may cause plants to take on a purplish cast, so do not set plants out too early in the spring. If there has been no weather problem, a purple cast could be caused by too little phosphorus in the soil and so should be added.
Wilted plants may be too dry or too wet; if too dry, water them; if too wet dig drainage ditches away from the plants. Fungus or disease may cause wilting, and must be diagnosed and treated.
