gardener, which means that she doesn’t use commercial herbicides, pesticides or fertilizer. She controls weeds by mulching around her plants and in the rows, and she’s found that the mulch cover also helps conserve moisture when the weather is dry.
“Mulching is really the only way to control weeds if you’re not going to cultivate constantly,” Barbara said. “I’ve found that if the roots of cool-weather plants are kept cool, then the heat does not bother them so much and they hold longer without bolting or wilting.”
Barbara’s success with annuals has encouraged her to start growing perennials. “I plan to buy one package of seed each year,” she told us. Right now, she has a long row of Rose Mallow, an oldfashioned perennial that adds to the charm of her pretty, well-kept garden.
