While negotiations over right-of-way acquisition go on, the town of Washington continues to get its water from the old town well. The reservoir for the public water system remains full. The four gallon per minute output from the old well makes it imperative, however, that users conserve water whenever possible. “That’s not just for us,” cautioned mayor Newbill Miller. “That’s for everyone in the county with a private well," he said, noting that the state’s continuing drought has brought ground water levels to near record lows.
Miller reported that the structure to house the town’s new 150 gallon per minute well has been constructed, the pump installed and electricity connected. All that remains is to purchase rightof-way so that the pipes can be laid to hook the well into the system.
In the meantime, Miller noted, should the supply from the old well prove inadequate, fire hose can be strung from the well to the nearest hydrant to ensure i that town taps do not run dry again.
