Mention cooking or gardening to anyone in Rappahannock County and the same name keeps popping up: Mrs. Mattie Ball Fletcher of Little Washington.
This amazing woman gardens extensively, cans, pickles and freezes enough to last through the winter, and cooks with such attention and imagination that Gourmet magazine visited her for lunch several years ago.
"They called me ‘silverhaired’,” she chuckled. "Well 1 am old, so 1 don’t tell my age. Everyone knows I’m old. and that’s enough."
