In case of a bite from a poisonous snake, the most important thing to remember is to stay calm, according to Dr. Werner Krebser of the Rappahannock Medical Clinic. Increased activity will only speed the spread of poison through the body.
The venom of Virginia’s poisonous snakes is primarily hemotoxic; that is, it destroys blood and lymph cells. This process takes a little time and the bitten person can usually reach medical help before any major damage is done. “You’re in good shape if you can get to the hospital in a half hour to an hour,’’ Krebser said. He noted that the speed with which the venom takes effect depends on how many times the victim was bitten, the location of the bite, how long it has been since the. snake last struck and other factors.
Krebser suggested that the reptile be brought to the hospital if possible to determine positively whether it's poisonous and what species it belongs to. He added, however, that universal anti-venom effective against all types of poisonous snakes is available.
