patterns and body form —something that can be done at a distance.
The northern copperhead has hourglass patterns of dark or reddish brown on a background of light brown to reddish gray. The head is usually a coppery color and the snake has dark spots along the sides of the belly. The young, bom alive from mid-August to early October, look like adults but with brighter colors and a sulfuryellow tip on the tail. Copperheads are generally eight to 48 inches long. They’re found almost anywhere there are rodents —bams, lumber piles, berry piles, sawdust piles, berry thickets, rock ledges, edges of fields, haystacks. Some hibernate with the timber rattlesnake in the mountains.
