To date this snake season, Jenkins’ tally is running a little behind the three dispatched last summer. But there appear to be plenty around in Jenkins Hollow.

Two Varieties Here
According to “The Snakes of Virginia,” there are just two varieties of poisonous snakes found in this area of the state: the timber rattlesnake and the copperhead. Of the total 36 species and subspecies of snakes in the Commonwealth, only four are poisonous.
It’s easy to identify rattlesnakes, but what if the snake has no rattle? The following are points to remember in recognizing poisonous varieties:
—All the poisonous snakes of Virginia are pit vipers; that is, they possess a heatsensing pit located a little below the mid-point between eye and nostril on each side of the head. No nonpoisonous species have it.
—Poisonous snakes have a single row of scales going clear across the underside of the forward portion of the tail. Nonpoisonous snakes have two rows down the entire tail.
