Roland doesn’t have a favorite gardening book that he goes to for advice. “Mrs. Swain, the lady across the street, has been a farmer all her life. She tells me a lot,” he said.
Roland will keep both his garden and his job at Lucky D’s after he begins ninth grade at Rappahannock County High School in late August.
Weeding and picking chores will have to take second priority to homework which he attacks as soon as he gets home from his afterschool job. He’s not worried about the warning "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
“I like working. I can’t just sit around and do nothing,” Roland concluded.
