At his first meeting last week, Rappahannock’s new superintendent of schools shared a “negative concern" with his board members, something that Robert Estabrook acknowledged as part of his job but said is a responsibility that he doesn't relish.
Estabrook reported that he stopped by one of the county’s two public schools on July 10 for a quick tour and found “evidence of misuse of equipment and supplies (and) general sloppiness outside the building as well as inside.” The new superintendent said he'd expressed his displeasure.
“1 don’t want to be unreasonable but I want the board, the patrons of the schools and the teachers to know that I’m concerned about school property,” he said. “My intent is not to wield a giant ax...But part of my intent is also to set a high standard.”
At the July 14 session, the first meeting of the new fiscal year, the board re-elected Beverly Massie as chairman and selected Newbill Miller as vice-chairman. Meetings will continue to be held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the elementary school library.
