The homeowners have agreed to bear the expense of having the tanks pumped out when full but still local health officials have refused to allow installation, according to Leake. The denial of the permits for the tanks is reportedly based on the county’s zoning ordinance which does not allow septic tank installation in Sperryville’s flood plain, he added.
WSA member Carson Johnson maintained that installation of the tanks with the owners responsible for having the wastes pumped out and disposed of would lessen pollution of the rive*.
Currently, Leake noted, the homeowners have to have their outdoor privies pumped. “The people don’t .iderstand the difference and neither do I. If they can pump out the privies, why can’t they pump out the septic tanks?”
The bathrooms were installed under the auspices of the WSA with HUD funds. Dennis said. “We ought to find a way to let them use those bathrooms,” he added.
