Spiders are common household pests in the fall. After spending the summer catching flies and months, adult spiders look for a safe and warm place to spend the winter.
Homeowners frequently encounter the eight-legged critters around windows, doors, houseplants and in basement and garage clutter.
William H. Robinson, Extension entomologist at Virginia Tech, said that most of us have terrible misconceptions about spiders. “They’re pictured to be poisonous, even deadly, and likely to attack at any time,” he laughed. “The only dangerous spiders we have in Virginia are the brown recluse spider and the black widow spider.”
The brown recluse is not common. The black widow is common but reports of its biting people are infrequent.
“Spiders for the most part are beneficial insects,” said Robinson, “eating other spiders and insects."
There are a number of spiders commonly found around houses. They include:
—Golden garden spiders have a rather flat head and thorax region covered with whitish hair. These spiders are black with yellow markings.

During the meeting conducted by the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries on Friday, August 28. the waterfowl hunting seasons and bag limits were set for the 1981-82 hunting season.
Again, during this coming season, sportsmen will have a three-part duck season with the first part opening on October 7, 1981 and closing on October 10, 1981. The second part of the duck season opens on November 24, 1981 and terminates on December 5. 1981.The final part of the duck season opens on December 18, 1981 and closes on January 20, 1982. Once again this year, hunters will use the point system. Opening at one half hour before sunrise, the shooting hours continue each day until sunset. The Commission also set a season for brant with the season opening on December 18. 1981 and closing on January 16, 1982. This is the first time in a number of years that there has been a brant season in the Commonwealth.
