Cool, crisp autumn weather blew in to Rappahannock a few weeks early this year, just in time to give Bambi and Jon Dinsmore optimal conditions for the trek over the mountains to Luray on their ten-speed bicycles.
The Dinsmores were in the county visiting Capt. and Mrs. Howard Holschuh of Castleton prior to pedaling across country on a 3,000 mile trip to California. This won’t be their first such expedition. In 1977, the couple biked from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine, in just two and a half months.
“We had such a good time that we wanted to try it again," Jon said. “Everyone we met was so pleasant and friendly.”
“We felt funny when we weren’t on bikes!” Bambi joked. This time they’ll take a route across the middle and lower half of the U.S. so they can see the central and southern states they missed the first time across. The pair will start off pedaling about 35 miles per day and work up to 50 miles as Bambi’s knees become stronger. They anticipate that this second expedition will aj$o take about two and a half months which will put them in California just in time to spend the Christmas holidays with their parents. The bikes will have to be left behind for the final leg of the journey home to their 27 foot sailboat in the Virgin Islands. The couple bought
