Political campaign workers and others are reminded by the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation that it is illegal to attach campaign posters to highway signs and posts.
In the months and weeks preceding election day, overzealous campaign workers often attach posters and stickers to stop signs, route markers, direction signs, and highway sign posts.
Not only is it against the law to do that, but it is illegal to attach stickers or posters to any post, wall, tree, building, or other object within the state highway right-of-way limits.
The Code of Virginia (Section 33.1-373) makes it a misdemeanor to do so.
In addition to the possible safety hazards from blocking out part of the sign’s message, cleaning off the signs and picking up the posters generally has to be done not by campaign workers but by state road rrews.
