The book gets off to a slow start until you get the introductory first chapter out of the way. From then on the action moves the reader right along. Best descriptive passages are the sometimes lyrical description of Stark Island and its wildlife. In preparation, author McClary spent five or six summers visiting the coastal islands on boat trips with her husband.
One of the best scenes is the description of the Chatfield Hunt, a story that won’t let the reader quit until he gets to the end.
In spite of its complexity and the large number of characters, the author skillfully delineates the development of the two main characters, Maggie Royal and Jared Stark through the everchanging scene and through those turbulent years of everchanging values.
In Jared we see the scion of an old southern family with a curse on the blood. In Maggie Royal, we watch a young girl grow and
