Manufacturers also started using company names on paint labels some 10 to 15 years ago. Joy noted, a move that left artists without any indication—even an incorrect impression—about what pigments the tube contained.
In an effort to bring about accurate labeling. Joy and a couple of other artists set up the Inter-Society Color Council. On that council. Joy served as the representative for Artists Equity, the largest national organization for professional visual artists.
“First, we had to find out what was in the paints. " she recalled. They purchased some 700 examples and sent the tubes off for laboratory analysis.
“It was a long process. It took three years and we found out all kinds of interesting things," Joy said. “The good point was that we found, as a general whole, the manufacturers were pretty honest.”
