But the voluntary labeling for quality, which will include a listing of the pigments used, must now be approved by the full membership of the American Society for Testing and Materials in an elaborate voting procedure.
“The ASTM sometimes stands for Awfully Slow and Tedious Methods,” Joy joked, noting that the voting process may take months.
Still, the quality controls for labeling are almost a reality, a success achieved with hardly a battle. That’s not the case with the second of Joy’s causes. “We’re working on another standard that’s causing a whole lot of fuss—chronic toxicity," she reported.
Again, her involvement grew out of a highly defined sense of responsibility as an instructor.
“Part of my job as an art teacher ^ to tell my students how to" handle their materials,” she stated.
The federal government had established requirements for labeling on acute toxicity. Nobody knew, however, the exact extent of hazards which might be presented by long term contact with materials and chemicals used in arts and crafts, according to Joy.
