Sleet, freezing rain and snow flurries kept crews in the county highway department busy round the clock on Monday and Tuesday as the first nasty winter weather of the season struck Rappahannock.
Doug Bywaters, assistant resident engineer for the county, said highway department personnel started about 7:30 Monday morning spreading abrasives and salt on all primary routes and abrasives on secondary paved roads.
"We had crews out all night watching the primary roads." Bywaters reported late Tuesday afternoon. "Today, we're really watching for cold spots and putting abrasives and salt on both mountains—at Chester Gap and Luray." he said. Bywaters added that he expected to have crews out working to keep roads clear throughout the night.
He said he hadn't seen any accidents in his travels throughout the county on Monday and Tuesday, despite the hazardous driving conditions and neither had he heard of accident reports from drivers of other highway department vehicles.
