paralleled a report from the Rappahannock Sheriffs Department late Tuesday afternoon. According to deputy John Godlewski. the county escaped the rash of fender benders that usually goes along with icey roads.
"We’re lucky that we had sleet first before the freezing rain,” Bywaters maintained. “Sleet provides more traction. It has a rougher texture and automobiles don't slide on it as easily. It will also shatter and break Up when a vehicle drives over it," he said.
However, reports from Woods ille and Boston revealed extremely hazardous conditions on Route 522. One motorist declared it the worst driving conditions she had experienced in over forty years of driving and added that lots of vehicles were in the ditches.
Asked if the highway department had any up-tothe minute weather releases on what to expect in the next 24 hours. Bywaters said he has to rely on the weather reports broadcast by local radio stations for his news. The highway department used to subscribe to a special early warning weather service "but they were wrong most of the time so it was decided that it was a waste of money,” he said.
