“The simmering filed exploded into violence and ‘exploded’ is the correct verb to use. Eastham’s men were alleged to have blown up a lumber-driving dam on the Blackwater which Eastham claimed Thompson’s company had unlawfully built on his property. When Thompson sent in men to repair the dam, someone posted a gang to bushwhack them and, with gun fire, drove them from the dam site. Again Eastham was accused. Apparently, a number of local folk believed the allegations against Bob Ridley because that particular dam became known as ‘Eastham’s Dam.’”
