Once head lice enter a home, they can easily be transmitted among family mem be re, health officials say. Each person should be inspected daily for at least two weeks. Clothing and hair brushes should be sterilized immediately.
Authorities point out that lice can spread quickly in the community and are not caused by any lack of cleanliness. Nor do lice select their victims from any particular socio-economic group. They are often found among school age children, especially in the lower grades. Nationally they attack about three million people each year. If a child brings them home, health experts say parents shouldn’t get embarrassed. They should just get rid of them.
Adult lice live for about a month, The females lay up to ten eggs each day. These nits attach so firmly to the victim’s hair, they cannot be combed out, but must be picked. They are usually found in the fine hair at the nape of the neck. If the infestation is not detected, each female can have hundreds of offspring. The infestation is usually accompanied by head scratching and intense itching or redness of the scalp asi well as small bite marks where the parasites stab openings in the scalp to suck their victim’s blood.
