Indicted For Murder

Judge Holt practically ordered a true bill on murder charges from the Grand Jury and the jurors complied with his directive. The verbatum text of Holt’s charge to the Grand Jury was printed by Conley in the newspaper to show the public the “judicious posture” of the judge, according to Bob Ridley’s chronicler. “It showed just the opposite for it reads like an edict of the queen in ‘Alice In Wonderland’, that is *Off with his head!’ After urging the jurors to bring in a true bill indicting for murder ‘in the defendant’s behalf so he would have a chance to ‘prove his innocence,’ Holt then let fly at them with threats of contempt citations should they refuse to start this man toward the gallows. The Grand Jurors dutifully gave the judge the true bill he wanted, possibly with the assurance already that the story would be different when the trial jurors retired for their deliber
