The murder tnal that The Advocate called “Without exception, the greatest legal battle ever fought in the history of the State” came to an end on December 16. “In a jammed courtroom the clerk read the verdict handed him by the foreman: “We, the jury, find the defendant, R.W. Eastham, guilty of involuntary manslaughter.’ It was a typical Rappahannock County verdict — if you’re not sure he’s guilty, give him the minimum sentence. After the announcement of the verdict, court was immediately adjourned.
