Two Yean In Jail
The following morning, Judge Holt sentenced Bob Ridley to two years of close confinement in the Tucker County jail with the nine months he had already served to be deducted from that time. So Eastham had one year and three months more in jail. “Whether close confinement would have deprived Eastham of the pints of whiskey which his visitors testified in court they regularly furnished him in jail is not known. Possibly so, for some awful prospect persuaded him to shake the dust of West Virginia from his boots by taking French leave from jail about three months after the trial,” his historian noted.
“He escaped with the assistance of his many friends and supporters, including the jailer himself,” Robert continued. “Later stories in Rappahannock had it that the prisoner escaped by using a wooden key which he had fashioned secretly. But he already possessed the key he needed; it was the friendship, admiration and respect which the Colonel had earned.
“One historian claims that Silas Blackman of Bretz met Eastham near the jail with a two-horse surrey in which Blackman drove him to Rowlesburg, West Virginia, where he caught a train on the B & 0 for the first state of h!s return to Rappahannock County.
