Giant Of A Man
“At the time of his trial, according to one West Virginia historian, Robert Woolford Eastham was, at age 55, 6 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed 250 pounds. Historian Hu Maxwell, who knew him personally, described him in 1884 as ‘one of the most perfect men, physically, in the county, state or the United States. Above six feet in height, well proportioned, deep and full chest, muscular limbs and erect figure, he presents as fine as appearance as Sam Houston did. He is active and athletic, walks with grace and is a splendid rider.’ There can be little doubt that he was, in fact, an extraordinarily large man. When I was introduced to Mr. Blackman, who had also known Col. Eastham personally, Blackman’s first comment was, ‘Well, you’re sure not the man your great uncle was!’ At that time, I stood six feet tall, albeit a little skinny.”
