When cases pop up in two or three different class rooms, Piper says, the administration does a “100 percent check,” looking for lice in each child’s hair. “We’ve had three 100 percents so far this year, but not many cases,” she said Tuesday. “They’ll get in one classroom.”
Piper is planning to send information home with the pupils soon so parents are welcome to call her or school nurse Frances Thornton at the health Department with other specific questions not covered in the handout.
Piper wants parents to understand that hgad lice are easy to conti^l if detected and properly treated before they have a chance to spread. A special shampoo is recommended to kill the lice and their eggs. It contains a natural pesticide made from extracts of chrysanthemum flowers. A second shampoo after eight to ten days kills lice that may have hatched from eggs missed during the first treatment. Meanwhile, once a case is discovered, other members of the family should be immediately checked to see if they also need the shampoo.
Along with the shampoo treatment, disinfection of clothing, bed linens and combs must also be done. Hats, scarves, coats and bedding should be washed in very hot water or dry cleaned. All carpets, upholstery and mattresses should be thoroughly vacuumed.
