tragedy was waiting in the wings and soon the cue for its entrance would be given. “The provoking incident was the hard fought Alice Williams-Carl Degler paternity case which was decided against Degler on March 11, 1897, before Circuit Judge John Homer Holt, a character who will fill the role of co-villian quite satisfactorily. Degler was a ‘good old boy’ with many friends in the Davis area and the ‘male chauvinist’ feelings of those friends, including Bob East ham, were outraged, probably because of the well-known personal character of the protagonist in the paternity case. Sixtythree men of the Davis area signed a petition to Judge Holt requesting that Degler be granted a new trial. Eastham's signature led the list of petitioners. The petition was presented to Judge Holt by attorney Parsons.
“Parsons was declared in contempt of court and fined on the spot by the judge for his temerity in presenting tl*p petition and the 63 signers were subpoened to appear on March 18, 1897, to answer the same charge.
