The potential Republican candidates in that race at the moment are former Fairfax Del. Wyatt Durrette who now lives in Chesterfield, former attorney general and unsuccessful 1981 gubernatorial nominee Marshall Coleman and former 6th District Congressman M. Caldwell Butler.
On the Democratic side the present hopefuls are Lt. Governor Dick Davis, Attorney General Gerald Baliles and Del. Dick Bagley of hampton, chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee of which Smith also was once chairman.
