In a remarkably candid comment the day following the meeting, Durrette evenhandedly summed up the independent conservatives’ dilemma.
“I think,” said Durrette, “that he (Smith) has made it clear in his conversation with everybody - not just last night -that he has a longstanding and close relationship with Dick Bagley, and that if Dick and I are the nominees, then he’s got a problem and he doesn’t know what he would do. He’s very honest about that. I think, however that if anyone else is the Democratic nominee, then i will have his support as I did in 1981.”
In 1981, Smith and most of the coalition supported Durrette in his unsuccessful bid for attorney general. His opponent that year was Baliles.
So, for the moment, Smith and the coalition are marking time on the governor’s race. They probably won’t decide in which direction they will march until the parties make their nominations sometime next spring.
