At its conclusion Godwin and Smith made statements to the press which were promptly misinterpreted. The misinterpretation made statewide headlines.
Godwin indicated that Durrette was his choice for the GOP nomination. Smith did likewise, saying that he believed Durrette would be the most acceptable Republican candidate to the rank and file independents.
Reporters on the scene immediately, and erroneously, filed stories to the effect that Godwin and Smith had endorsed Durrette for the governorship!
While this may have been true in the case of Godwin, a card-carrying Republican, it certainly was not in the case of Smith, who had no intention of foreclosing his options this early in the game.
The reason is that as much as Smith Might admire Durrette, he has equally close ties to his old appropriations committee colleague, Democrat Dick Bagley.
Indeed, the fact of Bagley’s candidacy and the perception that his support is increasing in Democratic circles is preventing any number of the state’s conservatives, including Smith, from getting locked into political commitments now which they might regret later.
