in years past. Several rockets detonated at a lower height than normal, causing the sparkling streamers to dance on the waters of the lake as they touched the surface before burning out. A fireworks expert at the display Saturday night explained that the density of the humid atmosphere did not allow the rockets to gain as much altitude as usual before exploding.
The fire department announced that the organically raised steer donated by Mike Massie, first prize in its fundraising drive, was awarded to David Z. Ferguson of Washington. A cash award of $500 went to Carol Atkins of Huntly, and dinner for two at The Inn at Little Washington was awarded to Butch Aylor, also of Washington.
Maurice Herndon, Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Church, reported that the church had “its best day ever. It was a success - eminently so. We did better than we’ve done before. It was our biggest day ever.” He attributed the church’s success to its triple whammy: “Angel Dips” of ice cream to cool the overheated strollers, “Holy Chow,” which featured Smithfield ham biscuits, and the “Resurrection Section.” The donated “white elephant” items this year included a travel tra
