The Virginia State Police recently cautioned motorists that it is now illegal for any person to operate any motor vehicle upon a highway with any sign, poster, colored or tinted film or sunshading material or other colored or nontransparent material upon the windshield, front or rear side windows, or rear windows of such motor vehicle other than a certificate or other paper required to be placed by law or which may be permitted by the Superin' tendent of State Police.
Section 46.1-291 of the Code of Virginia* as amended provides certain exceptions “...whenever a motor vehicle is equipped with a mirror on each side of such vehicle, so located as to reflect to the operator of such vehicle a view of the highway for a distance of not less than 200 feet to the rear of such vehicles.” One exception permits the affixing of sunshading material of a type approved by the Superintendent of State Police to the rear • side windows, rear window or windows provided the motor vehicle is equipped with the required mirrors.
