Congressman blasts critics

QUANTICO — A California congressman, speaking to a graduating class of Marine embassy guards, has attacked the press and critics of the U.S. Marine Corps for holding the service to a higher standard than any other branch of the military.

"When somebody errs, and they have the Marine Corps in their background, that’s always pointed out,” Rep. Robert K. Doman said Thursday.

"They don’t say he’s a former sailor or a former soldier or even a former fighter pilot. But no matter what rank he held in the Marine Corps, they say former Marine,” Rep. Doman, a Republican, told the 89 Marine graduates.

Marines assigned to guard U.S. embassies around the world are trained at the Marine Security Guard Training School at the Quantico base here.
