“We deeply appreciate the support which we have received,” Mr. Herndon said, from both those individuals who donated items for sale and the revelers who patronized the church’s booths.
Crowd estimates varied widely, but there was general agreement that the parking tangle which plagued the festivities last year was much less apparent this year.
Also only an unpleasant memory from last year was the scarcity of food. There was plenty on Saturday, although most vendors came close to, if not actually, selling out. The lines were still long, Chief Roach said, but everyone who was hungry got something to eat.
And, though the organizers of the day’s activities admitted to being pretty well worn out by Saturday night, by Tuesday talk had turned to planning next year’s celebration. Jim Thomasson, who assisted with the coordination of the evening program, said that the organizers are anxious to take the lessons learned from this year’s experience and put them to work next year.
From all indications, July 4, 1988, could very well prove to be the biggest bang yet for the first Washington.
