“The bats are back in the top of the jail,” Sheriff John Henry Woodward told the supervisors on Monday. “The last time we ran them out, there must have been a foot of droppings in there.”
In addition to the potential health hazard posed by the bat guano, problems will arise if the flying mammals should bite a jail inmate, the sheriff noted.
But while bats pose a threat to health and safety, laws prohibit their killing, the sheriff said. About all that can be done to the bats in the courthouse belfry and in the attic of the jail is to drive the creatures out and then plug up any holes so they can’t get back in, he explained.
