Several of the county schools' advisory committees have scheduled meetings during the coming week'. The Chapter 1 Parent Advisory Council will hold its second meeting on Monday, Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the RCES library. Miss Smith's Chapter 1 kindergarten and first grade class will present a program. The Vocational Education Advisory Committee will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. The committee will review the state report on the vocational education program at RCHS. Mr. Vickers' Technology Education class will present a program on wiring electrical circuits. The Gifted and Talented Advisbry Committee will meet in the School Board office on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 3:30 p.m. The committee is composed of teachers, administrators and parents, whose function is to advise, evaluate and provide comments and suggestions about the schools' gifted and talented program. Dengel’s essay in state contest
Florian Dengel, a junior at Wakefield School, has advanced to the state level of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy Broadcast Scriptwriting Scholarship Contest. Dengel's essay, on the theme "Why I Am Proud of America," was sponsored to the state contest by Richard Fogg of VFW Post 1860 in Front Royal. Contestants compete for nine scholarships in the national contest, including a $50,000 first prize.

County Treasurer Frances Foster reminds residents that their personal property and real estate taxes are due and payable immediately. All taxes not paid on or before Dec. 5 will be subject to a 10 percent penalty. The Treasurer's Office will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 6. If you have not received a tax bill, please call the Treasurer's Office (675-3334). The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 43:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Flu vaccinations urged
The Rappahannock County Health Department continues to offer vaccinations against the three strains of influenza which are expected to cause problems this winter. Some people are particularly urged to get the shot, including the elderly, children in school or day care with exposure to large groups of other children, adults who work in health-care related professions, and individuals of any age with chronic heart or lung disease. Though flu is often though of as more of an inconvenience, for thousands each winter it is a killer - in fact the fourth leading cause of death in older adults. The health department offers vaccinations by appointment. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on income. For more information, call the health department office (675-3516).
