Francisco Vincente: A senior exchange student from Spain, Francisco is the first foreign stu- >. dent to play for the Panthers. At 6 feet 3 inches" and 190 pounds, “he’s a good basketball player and definitely a welcome addition.” A strong rebounder, Vincente also has excellent moves inside. With some experience in the type of basketball played in this area, Coach Leake expects him to be a major contributor.
Kenneth Baldwin: This 6-foot-l-inch junior is recovering from a ruptured disk in his back and “is just beginning to show the skills that earned him the JV’s MVP award last year.” His recovery has been a slow process, but he shows improvement each day, Coach Leake said. With continued hard work, the coach expects big things from Kenneth.
Toby Waterbury: One of four juniors alternating in the small forward position, Toby runs the court well, penetrates well and has good moves to the basket.
Steven Lillard: A walk-on playing his first year of basketball, Steven is a good listener who is willing to learn. “He should see some quality time,” the coach said.
Tony Atkins: “The most all-out player I’ve ever coached, he’s earned the nickname ‘Wild Thang,’ ” Coach Leake said. “He plays 10 notches higher than anyone else — a real hustler.”
Jack Pullen: The last of the four small forwards, Jack is a constant threat inside the paint. He has worked hard and shows improvement on his inside play and his rebounding.
Keith Tobin: A senior returnee from last year’s team, Keith saw action in 12 games last season. “His heart is in athletics, and he brings leadership as well. He’s a great person to have on the team, one who has worked hard to get playing time.”
Tremayne Allsberry: Another senior who made the team as a walk-on, his strength is his inside game. “He will see more playing time as he learns more about the total game,” Coach Leake predicted.
Of his opponents, Coach Leake predicted that Central will present the toughest competition. Strasburg and Page County are also fielding strong teams this season, he added.
As for the Panthers, Coach Leake concluded, “I’m happy with them. They’re a great bunch of kids, who do what they’re asked and get along well together. We have the potential to be an outstanding team. It will come down to how much they really want to win.
“If results are any indication of the amount of effort put forth during practice, they will achieve what they set out to achieve.”
For the Panthers fans, that could mean a trip to University Hall next March.
The Panthers scrimmage against Shenandoah Valley Academy on Thursday, Nov. 30 at RCHS. The games, both varsity and JV, begin at 4 p.m. The season opener is next Wednesday, Dec. 6 at RCHS against Luray. Game time is 6 p. m. for JV, and 7:30 for the varsity contest.
