Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Sharon Pierce said she had seen the new plans, and they still called for a one-half million dollar facility.
“How do you all feel about this?” Board of Supervisors representative Mike Massie asked.
“If they’re talking about an allpurpose room, maybe they can spread it out,” Dr. Krebser said. “Considering what we have now. this is a big improvement. This is the first time for cracking the public’s wallet. They may run into hellish rock out there.”
“I think the public will let you know how they feel about that," Mr. Fannon said.
“This means raising the tax rate by three cents,” Dr. Krebser said.
For the 1992 fiscal year Mr. McCarthy listed $460,000 in capital improvements. Another school bus is scheduled for replacement, at a projected cost of $28,000; another $14,000 is allocated to continue the rotation and retirement of Sheriffs Department vehicles; $8,000 for continuing the lease purchase of computers for the financial officers; $175,000 for continued development ' of the landfill; $85,000 for a waste transfer station; $125,000 for renovating the town hall: $10,000 for microfilming records in the Clerk's office and $15,000 for half the price of purchasing automatic mapping equipment.
Mr. McCarthy explained to the planners that the waste transfer station was a matter the planners and supervisors will have to decide on. His recommendation, the county administrator said, is that when the contract for servicing the Scrabble and Huntly dumpsters expires that they be closed and another dumpster area, fenced and staffed, be located between Washington and Sperryville.
“We would get control over the waste stream and eliminate hauling costs,” he said. “It’s expensive trucking the trash, especially from Scrabble.”
“Why not make everyone haul their trash to the landfill?” Mr. Massie asked. “That’s what they do in Culpeper, and what you see in Culpeper is private trash haulers."
Dr. Krebser suggested it would be cheaper to fence in the Scrabble and Huntly sites and have them onlyopen on Saturdays.
Mr. McCarthy said that the county does not own the Huntly- site, but it does own the site at Scrabble
