In her position as director of the Child Care and Learning Center, Mrs. Sharp has helped organize a Valentine’s Day card-writing project among the center’s children. In addition to her brother, one of the center’s teachers has a brother-in-law serving in the Gulf, and the mother of two of the center's children is also stationed there. “We’re working on Valentines to send to those troops,” she said.
One disappointment to Mrs. Sharp is the lack of flags and ribbons displayed around the county, particularly in Washington. At CCLC, a handmade banner asks for prayers for the troops, and a small tree outside the entrance is trimmed with yellow ribbons. “I think more people ought to do something,” to show their support for the troops, she said.
The yellow ribbons have not found universal acceptance, however, according to Mrs. Sharp. She said her brother’s wife, and other military wives living near their husbands’ duty stations, were told by commanders that they should take the ribbons down, “especially if they
