Some of his eighth-grade students have already shared research on radon testing with students from other schools in other states.
Much of this was made possible by a grant Mr. Patterson received from the American Chemical Society. This grant enabled the high school to acquire a modem to use with the school’s computers. The grant also paid for on-line research time.
Besides the possibilities of using the modem to take advantage of the networks, the grant enabled all the chemistry and physics students to gain experience doing on-line research for papers and experiments that can be entered in the school system’s science fair.
Mr. Patterson is pleased with the results. “The main thing is they had the experience of it,” he said. “Last year I didn’t know anything about telecommunications, and this year all my students have been able to use it for research,” he said.
He and Helen LaCava, head of the math department, are applying for more grant money for new software and to continue with on-line research next year. Their proposal would involve using software to teach Boolian algebra, using Boolian algebra to conduct on-line research, and using other mathematical concepts to analyze the research and present the results. The project would conclude with a pizza party for the participants.
Former high school students frequently mention Mr. Patterson as one of the teachers who works hardest to make what they learn interesting. By participating in programs such as last summer’s institute at Rutgers and by applying for grant money to stretch resources available to the students, he is continuing in that tradition.
