And, Tuesday morning, the team got a boost to its spirits when Daniel Vanderkolk offered an electric hair trimmer. Taking a cue from last season’s Virginia Cavaliers, the entire team — including Coach Leake — trimmed two stripes in their hair above their ears.
It was a gesture to get the team together, although sevet-al Panthers got carried away and took the stripes to the back of their heads (“Thanks, Earl!”). “It is one of those little things to break the tension and bring the team together,” the coach explained. Psychologically, he added, it seemed to surprise the Eagles, who nearly stopped warming up when the Panthers took the court for their pre-game workout. “We opened some eyes tonight,” Coach Leake said.
One advantage for the Panthers going down the stretch is that they have played more games than any of their rivals. In the season’s last three weeks, Rappahannock will play twice each week, while their opponents will play three times, including bad weather make-up games from earlier in the season.
Unlike last year, when the Panthers’ schedule was frantic during the Season’s last weeks, this year will allow some breaks between games. “Even though we play some tough teams, they are spread out enough to allow us to get ample rest. That should be in our favor.”
