Bobby Jenkins led the team in scoring with 14 points, followed by Paul Hitt with 12. Michael Williams led off the boards with seven rebounds.
“We played well, especially in the second half,” Coach Leake said of the George Mason game. “We just allowed them to get too far in front.”
He said he feels that the team has finally settled into a rhythm. ‘We have been trying all year to develop some consistency in our game to carry us through February . . . Now we have played six straight quarters of consistent basketball.”
Though the Panthers had most of last week off for their mid-year academic exams, “next week will be test week again,” Coach Leake said, this time on the basketball court.
The Panthers face Page County on the road in Stanley next Tuesday, Feb. 4. On Friday, Feb. 8, firstplace Central visits Sperryville, followed by Strasburg on Tuesday, Feb. 12. “Pm confident that with the consistency that we have played with lately that we will see success,” he said.
With undefeated Central virtually assured of the district championship, “some of the tension has been released,” the coach said. The team has redefined its goals, “and it feels like we have been pebom.
