As the basketball season hits its home stretch, Coach Gary Leake hopes his Panther team has finally hit its stride.
A 15-point victory, 74-59, over second place Clarke County Tuesday at Sperryville left the Panthers in third place in the hotly-cohtested Bull Run District, sporting a 7-4 district record (8-8 overall). The loss dropped Clarke County into a tie with Page County, with both teams holding 6-3 district records.
“It felt real good to get this game in,” the coach said of the victory Tuesday. “I credit this win to the entire team. It was the best team performance of the year — everybody played their role perfectly.”
After the starting five got a lead early on, “we got quality play off the bench in the second quarter” from Kenneth Baldwin, Dearl Cloud and Michael Williams. “Those three, coupled with our starters, it opened up the game for everybody. ”
Paul Hitt led the Panther offense with 17 points, followed by Bobby Jenkins with 15 (13 in the second half) and seven rebounds. Jason Butler added another 13 points, while Kenneth Baldwin put another 12 on the board (10 in the second quarter alone).
