won by 15 points. Damon Grayson, the district’s second leading scorer, hit for 30 points that night. “He’s such a good offensive player, there’s no way to stop him. Our goal was to limit him and stop the others.”
Tuesday night, dogged by Hitt, Butler and Jason Henry, Grayson was held to 15 points. “And every point he scored, he earned,” Coach Leake said.
The first time out, Clarke out-rebounded the Panthers. This time, they turned the tables and hit the boards hard, trying to control the tempo of the *game while out-rebounding Clarke, 40-32.
The third factor, the coach said, was the Panthers’ free-throw game. Against Clarke in December, the Panthers hit only 42 percent from the line. Tuesday night, they shot 22 for 29 — their best percentage of the season.
“This is the type of game we have been looking for all year,” Coach Leake said.
Last Friday evening was not such a happy ending, however, as the Panthers lost in overtime, 61-57, to George Mason in Falls Church.
Struggling to overcome a quick Mustang lead, Rappahannock played its best basketball of the evening in the fourth quarter as Hitt scored six points in four seconds on a basket, two free throws and a steal. However, George Mason controlled the overtime, allowing only three points on one basket from Jason Butler.
