And, Mr. Rafala added, young children especially need to be reassured that they will be taken care of. “War is a frightening thing to them, and they need to know that no harm will come to them. ”
The counselors said that although children react differently to the situation, all of them are aware of what is happening. In their work with children around the area, “some are more thoughtful than others, but all are aware of it,” Ms. Mock said.
Finally, she suggested, her advice for children is applicable to the families of military personnel as well. “Families and friends need tp be cautious about letting it take over their lives. They need to get out and do some ‘normal’ things. It can be a real roller-coaster ... it is real easy for people to get depressed if they get tied in too much.”
Support groups are an excellent way for families and friends to sharfe the feelings they are experiencing with others, Ms. Mock said. That sharing also reassures them that they are not alone in their fears, and that their apprehension is a normal reaction.
