We applaud the request from Washington's Town ‘-Council to the town’s residents for suggestions about what ; they would like to see the council focus its attention on during ^the coming months. r Certainly, there are tasks which must be undertaken by |^the council, including a state-mandated revision and update of jTthe town’s Comprehensive Plan. And, there is business that 5 must be completed, including the substantial renovation and Vreplacement of most of the town’s aging and antiquated water .f distribution system. v But, above and beyond the business that must be ^attended to, there are also many areas that may or may not } deserve the council’s attention, depending on the feelings of >the town’s residents. J- We agree with Mayor Dean Morehouse that, in the past, ‘ the council has been largely reactive, waiting until problems lor questions surface before addressing them. That is not a ; criticism of the council in particular — most governments .tend to function that way. With so nftany problems that must “be addressed, government officials and bodies are ■! understandably reticent about beating the bushes looking for ^additional difficulties. -f But by its invitation, the council has offered the residents ;_of the Town of Washington an unusual opportunity: a forum r designed specifically for them to air their comments, * complaints and suggestions. 2* We hope that many of the town’s residents will take the
( council up on its invitation, attend the meeting and offer their k comments. After all, the more residents who participate in •"this forum, the more representative of the town the council’s S agenda will become. £ That will be a real contribution to the council, the
presidents and the Town of Washington. i,
