Pianist-composer Peter Kater and Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 in Charlottesville at the newly renovated Movie Palace and in Washington, Va. for two shows at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 at the The Theatre at Washington, Va.

The two also have a new recording, “Migration,” which includes vocals by Mr. Rater’s spouse, Chris White, and other Rappahannock musicians.

Of international acclaim, both performer’s music crosses cultural boundaries to inspire deep emotional responses in their listeners. Separately, each has received high accolades for their creative talents.

Mr. Rater’s 13 recordings range from inspired solo piano to full jazz ensemble projects, all of them topping national radio airplay charts.

“Rater has earned a distinct place among the most respected and prolific artists of the genre,” writes Jazziz magazine.

Mr. Nakai is well-known for introducing the Native American flute to the musical world. After mastering the melodies of the Plains and woodland tribes, he began adapting them to flt his own style.

Shaman’s Drum writes, “Nakai is expressing emotions and thoughts which come from deep places of transformation. The listener is invited to join Nakai’s experiences of such places.” From Tucson he travels extensively to perform musically as well as lecture about native peoples.

Mr. Rater resides in Washington, Va., performing concerts internationally and composing for PBS presentations, on- and off-Broadway theater and films.

Mr. Rater and Mr. Nakai first collaborated on their best-selling 1990 release, “Natives,” which received a perfect 10/10 by CD Review magazine. Their new release, “Migration,” was built around the framework of telling the story of the evolution of a soul and creating and experiencing ritual in one’s life.
