Mr. Johnson’s nudes mysteriously emerge from the paper, having been sketched with a minimum of emphasis on some aspects of the bodies. The degree to which the subjects are realized as persons tells us again and again how the artist empathizes with them.
Mr. Johnson’s accomplishment as a draftsman is impressive; however, one wonders where he will go next to achieve an artistic vision and expressiveness. In order to do this, he needs to take risks and to go beyond the goal of achieving a fine likeness.
