Board member Ed Barton said the ARB was faced with two questions: whether non-wood siding is acceptable, and if it is, whether Mr. Smoot’s application was acceptable. “We just have to make that hard decision,” he said.
ARB member Patrick O’Connell agreed that the existing siding makes Mr. Smoot’s application a special case. He added that the vinyl “may improve the appearance by making everything uniform.”
The Smoot application was the first for artificial siding since the new Historic District Ordinance was approved by the Town Council two weeks ago. The old ordinance specifically prohibited faux siding—the new one requires the board to judge appropriateness by other standards, including history, compatibility with neighboring homes, and other factors, but does not prohibit materials outright.
