Chief Park Ranger Randy Baynes said that a crew of park rangers and specially-trained volunteers burned off the fuel remaining between the canyon fire and the edge of the fire line. “This stopped the fire from spreading,” Baynes said. “If we can eliminate the fuel, we can contain fire damage.”
Baynes said that dry winds had turned the newly-emerging leaves into paper-dry fuel for a fire that burned out of control over sixty-five acres apparently from an illegal campfire in the Devil’s Stairs canyon. Baynes said that park officials were investigating the incident and had a few leads on suspects seen in the area shortly before the fire was spotted.
Washington Town Council elections are scheduled for Tuesday, May 4. All residents of Washington who are registered voters are eligible to vote at the court house from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the polls in the registrars office.
Rappahannock County Commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas K. Baumgardner has been nominated by Virginia Governor Charles S. Robb to serve as a member of the Virginia Laboratory Services Advisory Board. Virginia law provides that the Laboratory Services Advisory Board shall consist of fourteen members, one of whom shall be a “representative of the Commonwealth Attorneys of Virginia.” The appointment, which will run until the expiration of Robb’s term in 1985, requires confirmation by the General Assembly.
